Quite often, I get messages from people asking me about how to understand flash power. There’s a disconnect, occasionally, when it comes to understanding the fractions of the flash output.
When I talk about the fractional flash power readouts, I like to compare it to a pie. The number on top, which is always a one, is the number of slices of that pie that you get to eat. The number on the bottom is how many slices That pie is cut into. So, if I get a pie that is 1/1 that means I’m eating the whole pie and, if you look at my waistline, you can see that’s probably my favorite way to do it… But if I take a piece of pie and it’s 1/4, That means I get one slice of pie that is from a pie that has been cut into four slices. So that slice of pie that I’m getting is going to be smaller than the slice of pie that I started with. If I have one slice of pie that is cut into 16 pieces, 1/16th, That’s slice of pie is even smaller than the slice from the pie that was cut into four slices, 1/4. And if I keep going, I can get one slice of pie from a pie that was cut into 128 slices… 1 / 128, So that means it is just a sliver…
So if you’re struggling, hopefully this helps you. Just think about it as pie or, pizza!
