Stories with Light
Dance Photography Seminar
Dancers are the epitome of art in motion, and photographing them is truly an incredible honor. These performers bring the worlds of physical strength and creative movement together into incredible visual masterpieces like no other. Photographing them to their best advantage requires specialty skills, and learning of a new language and art form.
Take a deep dive into this genre with special guest instructor Harry Lavellen and Westcott Top Pro Julie Gayler. You will be equipped with the skills you need to capture the highest level studio dance images with off camera lighting. The seminar was not only developed by a dance and lighting expert, but the dancers themselves!
In this 2 day intensive workshop (with optional 3rd day), you will experience education that has been established to truly bring you inside the mind of a dancer from the language and positions used, to how to set up lights to showcase their strength and form.
You will also have the opportunity for hands-on collaboration with professional dancers in the studio with expert guidance and instruction.
Join us for an amazing experience that will equip you to showcase dancers at their very best, and your art to the next level.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What do I need to bring?
Bring your camera, batteries, and an SD card. Universal triggers and any additional equipment will be provided! If you are equipped to tether, please bring your laptop and necessary equipment. Some photographers bring their laptop to take notes. It is optional for day one and two, but you will need your laptop for the post production portion on day three.
Is this a hands-on workshop?
Absolutely! You will be able to work with the dancers 1:1 to capture your own images. And you will also assist on set to move and set lights, become familiar with equipment, and be involved in the creation of the images hands on from start to finish.
Will I be able to use images in my portfolio?
Yes! The primary goal is mastery of the skills you need to create your own dance imagery, but you will walk away with a key image from each set to market your knowledge to dancers.
Will transportation or other costs be provided?
You will need to cover hotel, transportation and other expenses, but lunch will be provided at the studio each day.
Is the Level 1 seminar a prerequisite to this workshop?
While we recommend newcomers to the world of OCF take the Level 1 seminar to get started with their lighting journey, this intensive is a standalone course any photographer can join! Knowledge of shooting in manual mode is strongly recommended, but all levels are welcome and can benefit from this deep dive into dance photography.
